PRP for Knee Pain: How It Works, Who Benefits, and What to Expect

Knee pain affects millions of adults each year, and for many, traditional treatments like cortisone injections or NSAIDs only provide temporary relief. Platelet‑Rich Plasma (PRP) offers a different approach that uses your body’s own healing biology to calm inflammation and support tissue repair.

What Is PRP?

PRP is a concentrated solution made from your own blood. After a small sample is drawn, it’s spun in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets (the cells responsible for healing and tissue repair). These platelets contain powerful growth factors which help regulate inflammation, stimulate cell repair, and support new tissue formation.

When injected into the knee joint, these growth factors interact with the surrounding tissues to:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Improve joint lubrication
  • Support cartilage health
  • Promote natural healing responses

This makes PRP especially helpful for knee osteoarthritis and chronic knee pain.

Research from 2025–2026 shows PRP is most effective for:

  • Mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis (Grades I–III)
  • Chronic knee pain from wear‑and‑tear
  • Degenerative cartilage changes
  • Patients wanting to avoid or delay surgery

PRP has moved from “experimental” to mainstream, with strong evidence supporting its use for knee OA.

How Many PRP Treatments Do You Need?

Most clinical studies use 2–3 injections spaced 2–4 weeks apart, though single‑injection protocols are also used depending on severity.

Results typically last 6–18 months, and many patients repeat PRP annually to maintain relief.

PRP vs. Cortisone

Cortisone reduces inflammation quickly but can weaken cartilage over time. PRP works slower but supports tissue repair and has longer‑lasting benefits. Several studies show PRP outperforms cortisone for knee osteoarthritis over 6–12 months.

What to Expect During Treatment

A PRP knee injection is simple and minimally invasive:

  1. A small blood sample is drawn
  2. Platelets are concentrated in a centrifuge
  3. PRP is injected directly into the knee joint
  4. Mild soreness for 1–3 days is normal
  5. Most patients return to full activity within 2–6 weeks

There is no downtime, and because PRP comes from your own blood, the risk of reaction is extremely low.

Cost of PRP for Knees

PRP is not currently covered by insurance for knee osteoarthritis. We keep our costs low and make this an affordable option. We also offer finacing. PRP starts at $350.

Is PRP Right for You?

PRP is ideal for patients who:

  • Want a natural, non‑surgical option
  • Have knee arthritis or chronic knee pain
  • Didn’t get lasting relief from cortisone
  • Want to stay active without relying on medications

If you’re looking for a treatment that supports healing rather than masking symptoms, PRP may be an excellent fit.

Ready to Improve Your Knee Pain?

PRP is one of the most promising regenerative treatments available today and the research continues to grow. If you’re struggling with knee pain and want a long‑lasting, natural solution, our clinic can help you determine whether PRP is the right choice.
